Classical Guitar - Nylon Strings
Known as the Spanish or Classical guitar this type of instrument is well suited for beginners: they are widely available in a variety of sizes, and nylon strings are much softer and easier on the fingers than the steel strings of an acoustic guitar.

A very popular starting point for adult beginners the acoustic guitar is an extremely versatile instrument that is not only a great way to start learning buy also you can experiment with finger-style or even slide playing!

Electro-Acoustic Guitar - Steel Strings
Electro-Acoustic guitars are simply acoustic guitars fitted with a pickup and pre-amp (commonly a Piezo style) that is used to amplify or record the sound of the guitar. Both Yamaha and Takamine have a solid reputation for producing high quality pickup systems for their electro-acoustic guitars. Brands like Fender, Martin and Tanglewood fit pickup systems from well regarded companies like Fishman and B-Band to their electro-acoustic guitars.

As with acoustic guitars we recommend a Fender for sound quality and value; the CD-60CE is great value. Yamaha offer the newly revamped APX and CPX range of electro-acoustics suited to experienced musicians and beginners alike. The best in the business since 1833, Martin & Co, fit Fishman systems to their X-Series guitars which are worth a look for the £500+ budget.

It is best to go for a dedicated acoustic guitar amplifier when plugging these in, as they are designed specifically to sound as natural as possible and not to alter the basic tone of your guitar. A great choice for beginners is the Stagg Acoustic Guitar range of amps or the Marshall AS50D for value.

Electric Guitar
Electric guitars are available in a large range of shapes, colours and styles so you should be able to find something to suit your taste. Most electric guitars are modelled on the Fender Stratocaster, Fender Telecaster or Gibson Les Paul. Squier (operated by Fender) offer a very good range of beginner electric guitars, as do Yamaha and Jackson. We would recommend the Squier Affinity Stratocaster or Telecaster for any beginner to get jamming.

In order to hear an electric guitar you will need an amplifier. Any guitar amplifier under 30 watts will be suitable for home use and many offer features like sound effects, equaliser, auxiliary input and a headphone socket for silent playing.

Bass Guitar
Bass guitars are an octave lower than a standard electric guitar which means that they produce a much lower sound. The neck is longer and has 4 thick strings. Squier, Gretsch and Yamaha are all popular brands for high quality beginner bass guitars. The Squier Bronco is a great option for someone who finds a full scale length bass to be a bit of a stretch, as it features a short scale length and neck.
